Three days of adventure in Finland: Never in her wildest dreams did Anna, a detective chief inspector, think she\u2019d win the prize draw for the trip. Yet, the husky trail, canoe trip and horse riding excursion became more than just reality \u2013 they turned into unforgettable moments.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

\u201cMy gaze wandered across the advertisement in the bottom right, and the words \u2018Nordic experience\u2019 caught my eye. Then I looked at the lake landscape in the background and read the word \u2018Finland\u2019. I\u2019d never\u00a0<\/span>seen it<\/span>\u00a0before, but I really wanted to\u00a0<\/span>go there<\/span>\u00a0in real life. I didn\u2019t know Scandinavia at all, but I\u2019d heard a lot of good things about the landscapes. I was a little excited and telling myself to stay calm. There wasn\u2019t much chance of winning, and anyway, winning isn\u2019t exactly my forte \u2013 except for the \u20ac5 \u2018jackpot\u2019 I won in the lottery last week. But nothing ventured, nothing gained!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Anna, a 28-year-old detective chief inspector, certainly wasn\u2019t expecting it \u2013 but she won three days of action and adventure in Lapland together with her friend Judith. Anna and Judith had imagined the start of their trip somewhat differently. They had three adventure-packed days ahead of them, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle \u2013 including a husky trail, a visit to a reindeer farm, a canoe trip, horse riding in the midnight sun and white water rafting \u2013 and all without luggage? Maybe it got stuck right at the beginning at the D\u00fcsseldorf Airport, or when changing planes in Helsinki, or perhaps during the layover at Ivalo, the northernmost point in their journey. To this day, it remains a mystery that only detective intuition could solve. Anna, a detective chief inspector from\u00a0<\/span>Mettmann<\/span>, and her 25-year-old friend Judith from Wuppertal, who had just passed her state law exams, took\u00a0<\/span>the mishap in good humor<\/span>. Luggage is \u201cjust a burden\u201d anyway,\u00a0<\/span>they said,\u00a0<\/span>and Lapland doesn\u2019t just unveil its pure forests, nature and allure to those who are visiting Scandinavia for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

\u201cAs soon as they realize they\u2019re allowed out, we won\u2019t be able to control them,\u201d warn<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0Marco, with a mischievous, full-belly laugh. Nothing amuses the Finnish husky guide more than the looks from astonished visitors when his dogs are released. The run-off area around\u00a0<\/span>the dog kennels is maybe 60 by 70 meters.\u00a0<\/span>Oda\u00f6na<\/span>, Nemesis and Daisy race one lap after another at full speed,<\/span>\u00a0occasionally bounding joyfully towards the visitors, only to immediately continue their rampage. Marco tends to over 70 huskies here in\u00a0<\/span>Torassieppi<\/span>. \u201cOf course\u201d he knows each one by name.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The dogs have safety ropes, like those used for alpine climbing, stretched across their hips and loins. Huskies are born to run \u2013 and, at the time,\u00a0the only thing holding them back\u00a0were\u00a0Marco, Anna, and Judith. Using a normal dog leash on these lively four-legged creatures would be like using silk thread as a water skiing rope. It takes half an hour for the tension on the guide ropes to ease. \u201cWe\u2019re just now starting their winter training,\u201d said\u00a0Marco, almost\u00a0apologetically. \u201cThe huskies don\u2019t have that much stamina yet.\u201d \u201cNot a problem for us,\u201d Judith\u2019s facial expression seemed\u00a0to reply.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The trek through Lapland\u2019s sparse forests t<\/span>ook<\/span>\u00a0half a day, and\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 quite literally \u2013 beastly fun. Blueberry bushes brush<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0against\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>calves,\u00a0<\/span>while\u00a0<\/span>rocks overgrown with lichen form<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0an otherworldly landscape. A small lake immediately reviv<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0the huskies\u2019 spirits. Suddenly, a white reindeer crosse<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0the path. Anna remark<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0that it<\/span>\u00a0wa<\/span>s \u201cthe most remarkable thing I\u2019ve ever seen\u201d \u2013 even after the later visit to the reindeer farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On this first day, which is still far from over, their packed lunch taste<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0incredible. The weather app report<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0sunrise at 2:36 am and sunset at 12\u00a0<\/span>minutes\u00a0<\/span>past midnight.\u00a0<\/span>At that<\/span>\u00a0time of year in Lapland, it never truly gets dark \u2013 so we ha<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0to take advantage of the day outside as long as our feet will carry us. \u201cSports, animals, and pristine nature \u2013 count me in. I love adventure and trying out new things. Couch potato? No way!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>wrote Anna in her application. All this combined? That\u2019s still to come.
